Renew, Revive, Refresh

Renew, Revive, Refresh seems to be the mantra as we ring in the new year.

I am so sorry. I get it. I’ve found unless I make put my energy fully into focusing on God, my efforts are futile. I’m not saying you haven’t involved God, but sometimes we miss how it works. Or maybe we didn’t learn the habit of abiding in Christ. As believers in Christ, it drills down to not only whose we are but also whether or not we believe what God says about us.

We must understand our identity in Christ (see chart below), this understanding absolutely essential to living the victorious Christian life. No matter what comes our way, in Christ we are secure. Our mistakes should not define us. God doesn’t hold our sins, mistakes, or missteps against us. The real me is in my identity in Christ. Once we know what God says about us and believe it to be the truth, everything about how we view God and ourselves changes.

I am Sheryl Giesbrecht. I am a woman, wife, mother, daughter, employee, writer, speaker, friend, mentor, runner. These titles describe things I do and relationships I have but they do not describe who I really am. I am a saint who sometimes sins. I am adopted into God’s family. I am a child of God. If we know who we are in Christ, we realize the victory has already been won. The battle is over, but we must claim the victory we have in Christ, our victor. Each of us must know our identity, that is, who we are in Christ.

Who am I in Christ? I am accepted. I am God’s child. (John 1:12) I am Christ’s friend. (John 15:15) I have been justified. (Rom. 5:1) I am united with the Lord and I am one spirit with Him. (I Cor. 6:17) I am secure. I am free forever from condemnation.(Rom. 8:1,2)I am assured that all things work together for good. (Rom. 8:28) I am a citizen of heaven. (Phil 3:20) I can find grace and mercy in time of need. (Heb. 4:16) I am significant. I am a branch of the true vine, a channel of His life. (John 15:1,5)I have been chosen and appointed to bear fruit. (John 15:16)I am God’s temple. (I Cor. 3:16)I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13) (From Who I Am in Christ by Dr. Neil T. Anderson, Bondage Breaker.)
