31 Days to Discover Israel | Sea of Galilee

#1 Jim n Sheryl w Lynda n Wendell Sea of Galilee

Thanks for joining me today for a sail across the Sea of Galilee.

A central point in Jesus’ ministry, the Sea of Galilee is known to Israelis as Lake Kinneret; it is only thirteen miles long by seven miles wide. The Sea of Galilee is one of the most well-known bodies of water in the world. It was on these beautiful shores that Jesus delivered sermons and performed miracles. Many famous sites are located around the lake, including Capernaum, home to at least five of the twelve disciples. The lakeside town of Migdal is the hometown of Mary Magdalene.

Our team boarded the boat named “The Promised Land” for a serene glide across the Sea of Galilee. During our peaceful journey, Pastor Wendell shared a devotional about Peter’s decision to get out of the boat after he saw Christ walking on water. Peter was in the middle of his walk on the water, and he began to sink. He took eyes off Jesus; he became afraid as he focused on the storm and waves. Jesus saved him and tenderly rebuked him. Matthew 14:31 says, ”Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’” In the same way, we too must keep our eyes focused on Jesus. The thing that has our attention directs our intention. Once we hear his voice and he says, “Come,” we need to go immediately. Jesus called Peter, and he came. Once he calls us we must stay focused and trust like a child trusts his parents. We must stay in tune with His voice and pray for God to direct our steps once he calls us.

#3 Our boat

Last week, I was asked to consider leading a group, as its leader is vacating the position. Although I believe in the group and the materials used for training, I sought the Lord and made my list of pros and cons. The second day of the decision-making process, I had a spiritual breakthrough. I was praying Scripture from Psalm 25:4–5, “Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are my God and my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” I sensed God recommending I say “NO.” For several days after that, I was guided by God’s peace. I didn’t argue with God like I usually do about taking on more activities to please other people and my desire is to please God. God had not asked me to take on the leadership role. Although I felt capable, equipped, and honored to be considered to fill the vacancy, I knew God was not leading ME to fulfill the responsibility. What a relief. God has plans for me and for the ministry that needs a new leader. God will provide for me, for the ministry, for the body of Christ, as we keep our eyes on Him.

Lord, thank you for the reminder to keep our eyes on you. Sometimes we are scared or we feel pressured, distracted, or even self-conscious when seeking your will. Help us to ask you to “show us your ways, O Lord, teach us your paths” (Psalm 25:4). Thank you that when we ask you to do this and we do our part by keeping our eyes on you, you always direct us in the way we should go. Thank you for allowing us not only to walk on water but soar above any distraction to do your will. Psalm 25:14 says, “The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare.” In Jesus’ name, amen.
